ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Asheville Tourists won for the sixth time in their last seven games by defeating the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-1 on Tuesday night. With the win, Asheville snapped Savannah's 19-game unbeaten streak which dated all the way back to August 2. The Gnats had won 18 in a row before a rain shortened tie concluded their Sunday afternoon double-header. Savannah's last lost ironically came against Asheville over three weeks ago.

As far as Tuesday's game, the Tourists jumped out to a quick start and rode the starting pitching of Sam Howard. Asheville's lefty spun seven innings and limited the Sand Gnats to one unearned run. Offensively, Forrest Wall put the home team on the board with a first inning RBI single. Shane Hoelscher doubled in Wall to make it 2-0.

In the fifth, Dom Nunez doubled and took third on a fielding error by Patrick Biondi. Roberto Ramos followed with a double to plate Nunez which gave Asheville a 3-1 lead. Nunez struck again in the seventh. The Tourists catcher led off the inning with a double and scored after consecutive wild pitches.

Jerry Vasto relieved Howard and worked the final six outs to record his second save of the year. Vasto stuck out a pair in the eighth before inducing three fly-outs in the ninth.

All nine Tourists reached base in the win and Asheville finished with 12 hits on the evening. Ricky Knapp suffered the loss for Savannah despite working five innings. In Asheville's last six wins, spanning 55 innings, they have surrendered a total of four runs.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night with the first pitch set for 7:05pm.
