Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds got their road series with the Kannapolis Intimidators off to a good start with a 5-1 victory on Tuesday evening. Delmarva (29-28, 62-63) took advantage of free baserunners, capitalizing on walks and hit batters in the series opener.
Kannapolis kicked off the scoring in the first inning. After a hit-by-pitch and single, Toby Thomas lined an RBI single for a 1-0 Intimidators lead. Shorebirds' starter Dariel Delgado settled down, retiring the next nine batters and eventually holding Kannapolis to just one run over five innings.
Delmarva took the lead in the fourth inning with a rally started by a hit-by-pitch. After Jomar Reyes was plunked, Logan Uxa banged a double off the right field wall. Cam Kneeland smoked an RBI single up the middle to bring home Reyes, and Uxa scored on a double play grounder for the 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, the free baserunners snowballed into three more runs for Delmarva. Luis Martinez again hit Reyes with a pitch and walked Kneeland before being replaced. Reliever Brad Salgado forced in two runs with two walks and another hit-by-pitch. Guillermo Salas skied a sacrifice fly for a 5-1 lead as Delmarva scored three runs in the rally without a single hit.
The bullpen shut down any chance for an Intimidators' rally. Mike Burke tossed three scoreless frames, while Ivan Hernandez finished the night with another zero in the ninth. Delgado picked up his second straight win, improving to 6-3 on the season. Luis Martinez dropped to 4-13 on the year for Kannapolis.
The Shorebirds continue the four-game set with the Intimidators on Wednesday evening. Right-hander Francisco Jimenez (0-0, 6.75) will make just his second start as a Shorebird, while right-hander Jose Brito (1-2, 4.03) starts for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Intimidators Stadium.
