Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads rallied for four insurance runs late in Tuesday night's game against the Charleston RiverDogs and ended up putting the extra tallies to good use, as the 'Dads survived a 9th inning surge by the 'Dogs to come away with a 7-4 win at L.P. Frans Stadium.
The Crawdads entered the 8th inning carrying a 3-1 advantage they had held since the 5th, before the club broke through for four runs on three hits, two walks, and a hit batter to stretch their lead to 7-1. The 'Dads ended up needing the additional padding, as the visiting RiverDogs surged for three runs on three hits and two walks before Hickory reliever Joe Filomeno shut the door by getting the potential tying run at the plate to line out to center field.
The Crawdads victory snapped an 8-game winning streak for the 'Dogs, while also moving the 'Dads overall record this season to 75-50, 31-26 in the second half.
The Hickory offense jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the 1st courtesy of a 2-out, RBI single to right by Jairo Beras to bring home Edwin Garcia. The lead held until the top of the 3rd, when Charleston used an RBI base knock by Vicente Conde off of Crawdads starting pitcher Pedro Payano to tie the score at 1-1.
The 'Dads re-took the advantage in the bottom of the 5th, when catcher Chuck Moorman roped a line drive, solo home run to left for his first long ball of the year and a 2-1 Hickory lead. The Crawdads tacked on another run in the frame when Juremi Profar knocked in Carlos Arroyo with an RBI single to right for a 3-1 'Dads lead.
The score remained the same until the 8th, when the Crawdads pushed around four runs to grow their advantage to 7-1. All of the runs came in after the club loaded the bases with two outs, as Arroyo picked up an RBI on a hit-by-pitch, Profar drove in a run on a walk, and Garcia delivered the big blow with a 2-RBI single to right. The 'Dads lead was put to the test in the 9th, as the RiverDogs loaded the bases against Hickory closer Scott Williams with two outs before Filomeno was brought into the game. A Bo Thompson RBI walk and a 2-RBI single from Billy Fleming cut the Crawdads advantage to 7-4 before Filomeno got Austin Aune to line out to center field to finish off the Hickory victory.
Moorman ended the night 1-3 with a homer and a walk, while Garcia finished 3-4 with 2 RBI and a walk. Profar also had a mutli-RBI night, going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a free pass.
Payano (3-0) earned the win for the 'Dads with one run allowed on 5 hits, three walks, and 6 strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched. 'Dogs starting pitcher Justin Kamplain (4-14) took the loss after allowing three runs on 9 hits over his 5.1 IP.
The Crawdads and RiverDogs (60-67/26-31) will play again Wednesday night in game two of their 4-game series, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm.
