LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - After two tough losses, the Indians refused to be outdone by Gwinnett on Thursday. They scored five runs in the fifth inning to stay ahead of the Braves and claim a 9-5 victory to split the series at Coolray Field.
Josh Bell finished the night 3-for-5 with a double, triple, and two RBIs.
The Indians scored the game's first run in the fourth inning. Willy Garcia, who leads the International League with 14 doubles since May 24, doubled with two away before backstop Ed Easley brought him home.
Gwinnett (33-41) answered with three runs in the home half, two coming on a single and error for Matt Lipka.
Indianapolis (40-33) retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning. G-Braves starter Chris Ellis walked three straight batters to start the frame which would see nine Indians come to the plate and five runs come across.
Tribe starter Trevor Williams (2-3) departed in the sixth inning after surrendering a run to make the score 6-4. He finished with 5.2 innings, 10 hits, four earned runs, no walks, and three strikeouts to earn the win.
Ellis (0-2) was assessed the loss after being chased in the fifth for allowing five earned runs.
The Indians added two more runs in the seventh as insurance. With Adam Frazier aboard, Bell hammered a triple to the center field wall to score him. Cole Figueroa notched his second RBI with a base knock to score Bell and make the tally 8-4.
Bell doubled and scored on an RBI single from Danny Ortiz in the ninth.
Kelvin Marte worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing one unearned run to earn the save.
The Indians will next head back to Victory Field to host Buffalo on Friday at 7:15 p.m.
