Boyd and Bullpen Help Hens Salvage One with SWB

June 23, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

In his first start back with the Hens, starter Matt Boyd put together a quality start in order to lead Toledo to a 4-3 road win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Thursday's game was back-and-forth, as each team's offense had an answer for their opponent's. The Hens struck first, started by a one-out triple by Anthony Gose in the first. Casey McGehee grounded out to bring in Gose and make it 1-0 early.

In the bottom of the frame, RailRiders outfielder Aaron Judge blasted a solo shot to right field to tie the game at one. Judge has made his presence known throughout this series, as he has drove in five runs in the three games at PNC Field.

Again, the Hens showed their resilience, taking back the lead in the second with some small ball. Jordanny Valdespin got the ball rolling with a single to left and proceeded to steal second. RailRiders catcher Gary Sanchez's throw to second bounced into the outfield, and Valdespin scampered to third. Dean Green then flew out to the warning track in right to bring in the runner and make it 2-1.

It took them an inning, but the RailRiders were ready to answer back again. In the home half of the third, Jake Cave singled to center with two outs. Judge continued his tear with a double that brought in Cave and made it 2-2.

The scoreboard's lone crooked number came in the fifth, when the Hens struck for two and chased SWB starter Kyle Haynes. Gose got the rally started again - this time with a walk - and moved to second on a wild pitch with McGehee at the plate. After McGehee walked, Tyler Collins singled to right to bring in Gose and take back the lead. Miguel Gonzalez followed with a single of his own that brought in McGehee and made it 4-2.

Boyd looked good in his first outing back with Toledo, going five innings while giving up just two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Reliever Warwick Saupold, a recent addition from Detroit's roster, pitched two innings while giving up one run on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. The last bit of offense from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre came in the eighth. Back-to-back singles by Pete Kozma and Jonathan Diaz chased Saupold in favor of Blaine Hardy. Hardy produced a double play that allowed Kozma, who advanced to third on Diaz's single, to score. Logan Kensing then entered and struck out Judge to keep it a 4-3 game. Bobby Parnell came in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his fifth save of the season and help the Hens salvage one of three games with the RailRiders.

The bullpen allowed just one run on two hits and four strikeouts in four innings of work.

The Hens begin a three-game road series with the Syracuse Chiefs that begins Friday before returning home on Monday to play the Norfolk Tide.
