Syracuse Mets News Release
Pawtucket, RI - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 6-1, Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. The Chiefs scored five runs in the second inning, the first time Syracuse scored more than two in an inning since June 6th. Trea Turner hit his fourth home run of the year to cap the inning.
Syracuse (34-38) started its half of the second when Justin Haley walked Matt Skole. After Pedro Severino replaced Skole at first on a fielder's choice, Matt den Dekker singled to put two runners on. Jason Martinson then brought home the first run of the game on a double for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Caleb Ramsey followed by legging out an infield single to short, scoring den Dekker. Martinson reached third after Brock Holt's throw from short got away from first on an error. The barrage continued from there as Tony Campana dropped down a perfect bunt to the right side of the mound. Haley got the out at first but Martinson scored for a 3-0 lead. Turner capped the inning from there with a two-run homer over the PawSox bullpen in left field for a five-run second.
Pawtucket (38-36) got on the board against Austin Voth in the third. Mike Miller and Ali Solis tallied the first two PawSox hits of the game back-to-back with one out in the inning. Holt then was called out on strikes. With Ryan Hanigan batting, Holt and PawSox manager Kevin Boles were ejected from the game arguing the third-strike call. Hanigan took advantage of the delay and ripped Voth's next pitch to left field for an RBI double to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Chiefs added a sixth run in the sixth. Haley walked Skole again to lead off an inning. After a fly out, Pawtucket turned to Kyle Martin out of the bullpen. Den Dekker greeted Martin with an RBI double, scoring Skole for a 6-1 Syracuse lead.
Voth held the PawSox to just five hits and the one run in six innings, with a walk and four strikeouts. Koda Glover threw two shutout innings out of the Chiefs bullpen and Nick Masset shut the door in a scoreless ninth.
Syracuse returns Friday to open a three-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens. Jaron Long is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite Matt Crouse for the Mud Hens. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
