Berrios Dominates, Wings Take Series

June 23, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

COLUMBUS, OH - Jose Berrios needed just 88 pitches to fire 8.0 shutout innings Thursday night and the Rochester Red Wings beat the Columbus Clippers 2-0 at Huntington Park.

Berrios (6-3) allowed three hits, all singles, and two walks while striking out nine. The Clippers (38-36) had just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position the entire game and that ended with a double play to end the fifth. Five of Berrios' eight innings were perfect including the final three as the last 10 Columbus batters were retired by the right-hander. Thursday was the second time this season that Berrios has completed 8.0 innings, joining June 6 vs. Buffalo.

The Red Wings (45-29) plated both of their runs in the second inning off Clippers starter Adam Plutko (1-1). Eddie Rosario continued his hot hitting with a solo homer and John Ryan Murphy blooped an RBI single to cap the scoring.

Marcus Walden worked a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to record his fourth save. Walden is one of three Red Wings relievers with at least four saves this season (Alex Wimmers, 6; J.T. Chargois, 5).

Adam Brett Walker and James Beresford each had two hits for the Wings.

Next Up: Rochester opens a nine-game promotions-filled eight-day homestand on Friday night against Louisville (Reds) at 7:05 p.m.
