(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting Pitcher Ivan Nova hurled eight shutout innings to lift Trenton to a 1-0 win over the Binghamton on Friday night from Waterfront Park. The win halted Trenton's five-game losing streak.
Trenton (31-28) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out solo home run by Left fielder Noah Hall. The home run was Hall's second of the season.
Trenton Shortstop Eduardo Nunez went 2 x 4 in the victory with two doubles. Designated Hitter Jesus Montero had his second consecutive two-hit game for the Thunder.
Nova tied his season-high with eight innings pitched. He yielded only three hits and walked only one batter. He struck out a season-high eight. Nova has won three of his last four starts. He retired 12 batters in a row during one stretch. Binghamton Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini scattered seven hits and one run over seven innings to take a tough-luck loss. Thunder Reliever Amaury Sanit came on in the ninth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his seventh save in nine chances on the season. Binghamton's best chance to score came in the fourth inning when the Mets loaded the bases with two outs off of Nova. But, Designated Hitter D.J. Wabick ground out to end the threat.
Trenton left nine men on base in the victory. The shutout was Trenton's eighth of the season, which leads the Eastern League.
Trenton continues a four-game series on Saturday with a day-night doubleheader against the Binghamton Mets (Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets). RHP Ryan Pope (2-4, 4.83) will start for Trenton against Binghamton RHP Tobi Stoner (1-2, 3.15) in the first game. In the second game, RHP Josh Schmidt (4-1, 1.20) will start for Trenton. Binghamton's Starting Pitcher for the second game is TBD. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 p.m for the first game, and 7:05 p.m. for the second game. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
