New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Erie, PA- Marc Rzepczynski scattered five hits and notched eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, and Todd Donovan and Brian Dopirak both hit home runs to help the New Hampshire Fisher Cats blank the Erie SeaWolves, 5-0, in the opening game of a three-game series Friday night at Jerry Uht Park.
New Hampshire (28-33) took the early lead in the top of the third inning. Nick Gorneault (1-for-3, BB, R) led off with a single off losing pitcher Pat Stanley, and Bryan Kervin (0-for-3, BB, R) drew a four-pitch walk. After a wild pitch, Luis Sanchez (1-for-4, 3B, R, RBI) hit a run-scoring grounder to plate Gorneault, and Kervin scored on Donovan's bloop single, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-0 advantage.
The Fishers added three more in the top of the fifth when Sanchez tripled off the right field wall and Donovan (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, SB) laced his first homer of the year, a two-run blast over the left-centerfield wall. It was Donovan's first home run since May 8, 2008. One out later, Dopirak (1-for-5, HR) launched Stanley's 2-2 pitch off the videoboard in right-center for his team-leading 13th homer of the season, giving New Hampshire a 5-0 lead.
Rzepczynski (7-5) allowed only one runner to reach third base. The left-hander snapped a four-start winless stretch and has now pitched 13 shutout innings in two starts this month. His 80 strikeouts lead the Eastern League.
Danny Farquhar finished off the Fisher Cats' seventh shutout win of the season by holding Erie (33-27) to one hit, while notching two strikeouts in two scoreless frames.
The Fisher Cats look to make it back-to-back wins when they send right-hander Rey Gonzalez (3-3, 2.74) to the mound on Saturday night against Sea Wolves' left-hander Jon Kibler (2-4, 4.38) in the second game of the three-game weekend series. Game time is 7:05pm, and radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, to open a four-game series against the Akron Aeros, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, at 7:05pm. There will be a pre-game parade to honor students who participated in the CCSNH Fisher Cats Reading Challenge, and it's Fungo's Birthday.
