Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Akron, OH) - LHP Felix Doubront (4-2) and three relievers combined on a 5-hit shutout as Portland (31-29) blanked the Akron Aeros (38-21) 1-0 on Friday night in front of 6,612 at Canal Park. The Sea Dogs evened their roadtrip at 2-2 and became the final team in the Eastern League to pick up a shutout.
C Mark Wagner (2-for-4, RBI, 2B) knocked in the game's lone run with a 2-out, run-scoring double in the sixth inning off losing pitcher RHP Zach Putnam (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER). RF Reid Engel began the rally with a one-out walk and scored easily from first base on Wagner's game-winning hit.
RHP T.J. Large retired both batters faced in the ninth to earn his 7th save of the season and his second in as many nights. RHP Chris Province secured his 5th hold of the year with two scoreless frames and LHP Andrew Dobies wiggled out of trouble over 1.1 scoreless innings on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts to pick up his first hold of the season.
The biggest play of the game happened in the eighth inning which enabled the Sea Dogs to hold on for the victory. Dobies walked 2B Cristo Arnal and LF Nick Weglarz after two outs but on C Carlos Santana's single to left field, Arnal was thrown out at home by LF Iggy Suarez. Suarez made his 1st professional start in the left field and just the fourth in the outfield in his professional career. Earlier in the game, SS Argenis Diaz was nabbed at the plate on DH Jon Still's single to center field.
Doubront scattered four hits, fanned two and did not issue a walk over five frames. In the third inning, the lefty yielded a lead double to RF John Drennan but retired the next three batters. Akron stranded seven and finished the game 1-for-6 with runners-in-scoring position.
RHP Jake Westbrook made his second rehab start of the season for the Akron Aeros and the second in his career against Portland (Sea Dogs beat Westbrook in 2007 at Canal Park). Westbrook fired four spotless frames on three hits, no walks and three strikeouts. RHP Carlton Smith hurled two innings of scoreless relief and RHP Steven Wright pitched a perfect ninth.
The Sea Dogs can clinch a .500 roadtrip with a win on Saturday night over the Akron Aeros in game two of the series at Canal Park beginning at 7:05 PM.
