Akron RubberDucks News Release

A Win for the Record Books...The Aeros dominated New Hampshire 12-0 Wednesday night, taking what turned out to be the series finale as starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez and three relievers combined on a one-hitter. The margin of victory marked Akron's most lop-sided win in three years, dating to a 14-0 whitewash of Harrisburg on May 21st, 2006. The Aeros jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, striking for four runs despite not getting a hit off Fisher Cats starter Randy Boone. The right-hander opened the game with a four-pitch walk and a hit batter before a fielder's choice, two errors by first baseman David Cooper on successive pitches and a sac fly accounted for the scoring. LF Nick Weglarz then drained all the drama from the contest with a three-run triple in the fourth, and the Canadian starred again in the fifth as his two-run triple capped the scoring. Weglarz tied a franchise record with two triples in the game and also matched an Aeros season-high with five RBI. Akron maintained a 3.0-game lead over Reading in the Southern Division, while New Hampshire fell for the 16th time in 21 outings.

Gomez Great Again...Lost in the excitement of the 12-run explosion was the magnificent performance from starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez. The 21-year-old native of Caracas, VZ earned his first win and first quality start since his perfect game May 21st at Trenton, as he tossed six shutout innings while allowing only a single and a walk and striking out five. With the stellar start he snapped out of a recent funk which saw him allow 27 hits and 17 runs (15 earned) in 16.0 innings pitched (8.44 ERA) spanning the three starts since his historic game against the Thunder. LHP Matt Meyer and RHPs Brian Grening and Erik Stiller covered the final three innings to preserve Akron's sixth shutout of the season, and the one hit surrendered marked the first one-hitter for the Aeros since April 25th, 2006 at Binghamton when Nick Pesco, Jim Ed Warden, and Tom Mastny combined to shut down the B-Mets.

Applied Mathematics...The 4,110 fans at Canal Park Wednesday witnessed two rare feats: a triple by Weglarz and a stolen base from 1B Beau Mills. Weglarz's three-baggers in the fourth and fifth were just the sixth and seventh in his professional career, spanning 330 games. Mills stole second base in the third, and it was just his third career swipe in his 243rd game.

Singing in the Rain Again...Yesterday's game with New Hampshire was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday, June 17th in Manchester starting at 6:05 p.m. Additionally, yesterday's promotion of This City Reads! will take place at a date to be announced later in the season. It was the eighth rain out in just over two months of the season for Akron, not including a game against Reading May 27th that was suspended in the second inning and continued the very next day. In fact, the Aeros had a road trip to Bowie and Altoona with four straight days of postponed games stretching from May 3rd through May 6th and Akron now has three more doubleheaders scheduled later in the year.
