Defenders Capture Third Straight WIn

NORWICH, CT- A dreary day got brighter once the first pitch was thrown between Connecticut and Altoona but it was the Defenders (34-26) taking full advantage as they won their third straight 5-1 Friday night at Dodd Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,040.

Connecticut scored lone runs in the first three innings and a pair in the sixth to take game one of the best of three series.

2B-Brock Bond doubled to leadoff the first and advanced to third on a CF-Mike McBryde sac bunt. 3B- Brad Boyer drew a walk then on a double steal swiped the second base bag as Bond scored the first run of the game.

Three consecutive singles with one out in the second inning loaded the bases for Bond who ripped an RBI single to drive in the Defenders second run.

Brad Boyer leadoff the third with a solo homer, his second of the season then Connecticut took advantage of two Altoona errors in the fifth to plate Boyer and Pill, who scored on a RBI double by RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve.

Defender's starter, LHP-Jesse English (4-3) turned in his best performance of 2009 throwing 5.2 scoreless innings giving up just three base hits to earn his fourth win. RHP-Brad Lincoln (1-4) was an able to settle down as he suffered the loss allowing five runs from nine hits over five innings.

Both teams will meet again in game two of this weekend series Saturday at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. LHP-Madison Bumgarner (4-0) will make the start for the Defenders as the Curve will counter with RHP-Yoslan Herrera (3-0).
