
Tough start, better finish \'Dogs win 5-3

(Portland, ME) - The Sea Dogs (64-72) fell behind 3-0 after a ½ inning but scored the next five runs to defeat the Trenton Thunder (67-69), 5-3 on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. Portland's victory evens the series at one-game apiece and puts Trenton 1.5 games behind the New Britain Rock Cats for the final playoff spot in the Northern Division.
RHP Blake Maxwell (6-8) yielded a 3-run double with two outs in the first inning to C Kyle Anson but allowed two hits over the next five frames. Maxwell, who earned the win, finished his outing with two walks and three strikeouts. RHP Richie Lentz and LHP Tommy Hottovy worked scoreless frames to earn holds - RHP Bryce Cox worked around two hits in the ninth inning to secure his 12th save of the season.
The Sea Dogs cracked the scoring in the fifth inning when SS Yamaico Navarro began a 2-out rally with a double. RF Jason Place smacked a single off the wall, scoring Navarro, but Place was thrown out at second base. Portland scored that run off starter RHP Josh Schmidt (ND), who allowed only three hits, two walks and five strikeouts over 5 IP.
In the sixth inning, RHP Philip Bartleski (0-1) made his Double-A debut and was roughed up for two hits, one walk and suffered the loss for Trenton. 2B Ryan Khoury led off with a bunt-single, LF Daniel Nava walked and CF Ryan Kalish cracked a 2-run triple. LHP Wilkin Arias relieved Bartleski and yielded a run-scoring to 3B Jorge Jimenez for the game's final run.
The Sea Dogs wrap up their 3-game series on Thursday night against the Thunder beginning at 6:00 PM from Hadlock Field. Notes...Before Wednesday's game, the Sea Dogs inducted Mark Kotsay into their Hall of a former Sea Dog into their Hall-of-Fame...Kalish is 5-for-8, 2 RBI in the series after going 5-for-30 on the previous roadtrip...Trenton is 5-for-31 (.161) with runners-in-scoring position in the two games...Place stole his 1st Double-A base and picked up his 2nd outfield assist in the last three games.
