by Jacob Rosen
This summer, I worked as the Media Relations Intern for the Akron Aeros and now I am in my first week back at class at the University of Dayton. All I can say is "Wow". It is amazing to consider I just spent about 14 weeks hanging with some of the top prospects in the Indians organization, and it is even crazier when you consider the Aeros continue to smash Eastern League records day after day. I have met some other classmates that worked for other minor league teams but my opportunity to be involved with one of the most successful professional teams of the decade was a dream come true.
I began working for my hometown team after finishing classes at UD on April 30th. The team suffered through four straight rainouts in Altoona and Bowie while also struggling with a five-game homerless streak when they finally resumed playing. In the end, the Aeros hovered around .500 for the months of May and June but I certainly had nothing to complain about as I spent the majority of my time in the Canal Park press box.
My job responsibilities as an intern under the direction of Media Relations Coordinator Rob Sinclair were to help prepare media notes, assist in media game day preparations, write press releases and maintain the press box throughout the games. Rob also doubles as one of the Aeros radio personalities this season along with long-time play-by-play man Jim Clark, and thus I was in charge of taking care of the media during the contest. During this time, I had the extreme pleasure of working alongside Stephanie Storm from the Akron Beacon Journal all season while also sitting next to several reporters from the Cleveland Plain Dealer and other local publications.
From shuffling Distillata water jugs to the team offices and the press box, to designing the 2009 Akron Aeros baseball cards, to getting daily lineups from the managers, to pulling tarp, to stuffing and wrapping thousands of hot dogs to picking up trash after a game, I can say without exaggeration that I did just about everything this summer. During these three months, I was so in tune with what was going on with the Aeros that I always knew who was pitching next and what possible roster moves were on the horizon. Although I am an avid sports fan for all of the Cleveland-area sports teams, my connection with this ball club was the deepest I had ever had because of my familiarity with the players, coaches and front office.
Not too many people, let alone an 18-year-old college student, can tell their friends that for their summer vacation away from school that they were exchanging fist bumps with Jeanmar Gomez (who threw only the second nine-inning perfect game in Eastern League history), trading jokes with Nick Weglarz or even trying to explain to Carlos Santana how great he really is. My relationship with the players and coaches was necessary as part of my job as Rob's assistant as I had to write the daily media notes and press releases, but I would definitely like to thank our clubhouse managers Shad Gross and Steve Morgan for everything they did to help me out during this year and making it easier for me to get access to the team.
It was certainly a grueling three months of working a ton of hours for a minor league baseball team, but I truly believe it was a rewarding experience.
The 2009 Akron Aeros will always be my favorite team as I had the greatest summer experience of my life with this team. Speaking of, Akron just recently clinched first place in the Southern Division yet again and the playoff schedule is already set, so I will do my best to come back and cheer on the team in the post-season. Go Aeros!
