New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Erik Lis and Whit Robbins led a 14- hit attack as the Rock Cats pounded Reading, 11-6 on Wednesday night. The Rock Cats (69-67) have taken 12 of 13 games from the Phillies (71-64) this season and - combined with a loss by Trenton - now have a two game lead for the second and final playoff spot in the Northern Division.
Lis and Robbins each had three hits apiece; Lis slugged his team-leading 17th homer and crossed the plate three times and Robbins knocked in four runs.
The Rock Cats took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the second. Lis started the inning off with a base hit to center and Wilson Ramos followed with a double to center to put both runners in scoring position. Steve Singleton's groundout to second allowed Lis to score the first run of the game. Juan Portes followed with a grounder to third that knocked in Ramos for the second run, but Portes was thrown out on a close call at first.
In the third, the Rock Cats remained hot at the plate with back-to-back singles by Yancarlos Ortiz and Brian Dinkelman to start the inning. Reading starter Michael Stutes then plunked Alejandro Machado to load up the bases with no outs. Stutes' struggles continued as he unleashed a wild pitch - that allowed Ortiz to score from third - before he served up a two-run double to Luke Hughes that put the 'Cats ahead, 5-0.
Ryan Mullins dominated Reading into the fourth inning - retiring the first 11-straight batters - before Dominic Brown reached base on an infield single. A throwing error by Mullins allowed Brown to move to second base. Kevin Mahar then singled to left to knock in Brown and put the Phillies on the board.
The R-Phils struck again in the fifth. Freddy Galvis singled with one out and scored on a double by Ozzie Chavez. Mullins then served up a two-run homer to Quintin Berry that closed the gap, 5-4.
Lis gave the Rock Cats breathing room in the fifth with a solo shot over the right field wall. The Rock Cats padded on to the lead with three more runs in the inning on an RBI double by Portes and a two-run single by Robbins to widen the lead, 9-4. Robbins added a two-run double in the seventh.
Mullins (11-11) allowed four runs on six hits through 6 2/3 innings to pick up his team-leading 11th victory. He added to his league-high strikeout total by striking out seven.
Stutes (8-8) was hammered for nine runs on nine hits through 4 2/3 innings.
