September 2, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Eric Niesen hurled a season-high 7.1 innings to notch his second straight win and Kirk Nieuwenhuis finished a triple short of the cycle in the B-Mets 6-1 win over Bowie Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium. Nieuwenhuis recorded four hits in five trips to the plate, including a pair of doubles and a home run.
Binghamton (52-83) led wire-to-wire thanks to a run in the first inning off Baysox starter Ryohei Tanaka. Nieuwenhuis led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on Ruben Tejada's sac bunt. D.J. Wabick stepped up next and lined a single to left-center, plating Nieuwenhuis to give the B-Mets a 1-0 advantage.
Nieuwenhuis struck again in the third with a solo homer to right, his first AA homer after hitting 16 long balls with St. Lucie. After Tejada flied out to center, Wabick joined Nieuwenhuis with a solo homer off the starter Tanaka to straightaway center, stretch the lead to 3-0.
The B-Mets rallied for a couple of two-out runs in the fifth courtesy of two recent call-ups. Rightfielder Carlos Guzman, who was called up from St. Lucie before the game lined a single into center with two away to drive home Nieuwenhuis and Zach Lutz followed with a run-scoring single to center to move the lead up to 5-0.
Meanwhile, Niesen was in the process of dazzling the Baysox. The southpaw had faced three over the minimum entering the eighth inning, where he allowed Bowie's only run. Niesen worked 7.1 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with five strikeouts to pick up his fourth win. Jose De La Torre filled in the rest of the way with a 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Tanaka was charged for five runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings to drop to 4-3 on the season for Bowie (69-67).
The nine total bases for Niewenhuis marks a new season-high for a B-Mets player, besting Shawn Bowman's eight, set May 10 at Trenton.
The B-Mets will meet the Baysox in the rubber match of the three-game series Thursday night. Binghamton will throw LHP Edgar Alfonzo (4-5, 4.01) and RHP Fredy Deza (5-7, 3.56) will go for Bowie. The first pitch is slated for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
