Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
On Thursday, June 15, 2006, Special Olympics, along with the Albuquerque Isotopes, is offering savvy cell phone users the opportunity to "hit a home run" by recycling used cell phones to raise funds and awareness in support of athletes with intellectual disabilities in our community. Launching nationwide, and throughout New Mexico, this year-long effort will encourage Americans to help protect the environment while sharing their heart-felt support for Special Olympics' outstanding and courageous athletes.
While the United States lags behind much of the industrialized world in phone recycling, American consumers tend to upgrade their phones more often than people of other nations. Approximately 130 million wireless phones a year add up to a huge, growing volume of toxic electronics in U.S. landfills.
Special Olympics, with the help of RMS Communications Group, has created an opportunity to provide a solution to this problem and generate national support for athletes with intellectual disabilities so they may continue to gain acceptance in their communities while achieving in their sports. Fans are invited to bring their old cell phones to the Isotopes game against the Round Rock Express this Thursday and recycle it for Special Olympics. For each phone recycled through the program, Special Olympics will receive from $1 to $100.
"Our Special Olympics athletes thrive in their communities from the benefits they receive on the playing field," said Randy Mascorella, executive director of Special Olympics New Mexico. "Several recycled cell phones will make it possible for an athlete to excel in their sport for a season, as well as change negative attitudes about their abilities."
Fans can drop off their phones at Recycle for Special Olympics collection bins at the Isotopes game on Thursday, June 15. All cell phone donors will receive a Buy One Get One Free Reserved Level Seat Voucher for the Monday, August 1st game versus Fresno Grizzlies at 7:05 pm.
