June 13, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
James Shanks extended his hit streak to 11 games with a ninth-inning single, but the Round Rock Express (36-28) scored the game's final seven runs and ran away with a 12-4 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes (38-28) Tuesday night at Isotopes Park.
Albuquerque led just once, 1-0, after one complete inning. From there, the Express had an answer for everything the 'Topes did offensively and Round Rock managed to light up the Isotopes bullpen for seven runs in the final three innings.
'Topes starter Jason Vargas (2-2) exited after just three innings with a minor right oblique strain. He stuck around long enough to earn the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk. Jimmy Anderson came on to relieve Vargas and allowed six runs on six hits with five walks over 3.2 innings. Chris Resop and Brad Clontz combined to surrender three runs on four hits through the final 2.1 innings.
Round Rock starter Jason Hirsh (7-2) earned the victory, scattering four runs on seven hits through seven innings. He walked three and struck out three, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Roberto Giron closed things out with two scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
In the first, Eric Reed led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a Robert Andino groundout. Reed would come around to score on a Jason Wood single through the hole on the left side, for a quick 1-0 'Topes lead.
The Express shot right back with a run in the second and two more in the third for a 3-1 lead after 2.5 innings. Drew Niles pinch-hit for the injured Vargas in the bottom half of the third, inducing a lead-off base on balls. He'd cross the plate two batters later when Andino grounded into a double play, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.
Both teams traded two-spots in the fourth, with Mike Rodriguez hitting a two-run blast for the Round Rock runs and the 'Topes using an RBI single by Matt Cepicky and a run-scoring double play groundout by Shanks to account for their two.
From that point forward, the Express offense went to work and the 'Topes offense couldn't manage to push anything else across. Round Rock scored four times in the seventh inning, once in the eighth and added two more in the ninth to even the series 1-1. Round Rock collected 16 hits on the night, with Rodriguez picking up three with five RBI and Luke Scott recording three with three runs scored.
Reed, Wood, and Scott Seabol each had two hits and a run scored for Albuquerque, while Shanks's ninth-inning, broken-bat single pushed his hitting streak to a season-long 11 games.
The Isotopes and Express continue their four-game series on Wednesday with game three slated to begin at 7:05 p.m. MT. Albuquerque sends Renyel Pinto (4-1, 2.45) to the hill, and Chris Baker (6-2, 2.19) takes the ball for Round Rock.
On Thursday, June 15, the series wraps up with one of the Isotopes' most popular promotions, trading card night, where the first 3,000 fans will get a pack of 2006 'Topes baseball cards. Tickets can be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, www.albuquerquebaseball.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
