Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Portland - The Tucson Sidewinders scored seven runs on 14 hits and rode a strong performance from their bullpen to a 7-4 win over the Portland Beavers on Tuesday night at PGE Park. The win is the 10th in a row for Tucson and their sixth in six games against Portland.
Alberto Callaspo went 4-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, Stephen Drew had two hits and two runs and Carlos Quentin went 3-5 with two RBI as the top three hitters in Tucson's order combined to go 9-14 with six runs.
Jeff Bajenaru, Casey Daigle and Tony Pena combined for four hitless innings of relief. Pena worked a perfect ninth for his first save with the Sidewinders.
The Sidewinders jumped on top with a pair of runs in the top of the first as Quentin's double down the left field line plated Callaspo and Drew. The two base hit was Quentin's 21st of the night. He leads the PCL in that category.
Tucson's lead grew to 4-0 in the third. Callaspo singled, Drew doubled and Quentin walked to load the bases with nobody out. Scott Hairston's single brought home Callaspo before Drew scored on a double play ball from Chris Young.
Jack Cassel took the loss for Portland. Cassel (2-4) allowed eleven hits and six runs in six innings of work.
The Beavers made it a 4-2 game in the third. Manny Alexander scored on a Hairston error and Justin Leone singled home a run against Tucson starter Adam Bass (3-0). Bass earned the win despite seven walks in his five innings. He allowed four runs and struck out one.
Portland made it 4-3 on Alexander's sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Tucson advanced the lead to 6-3 in the fifth as Chris Young's single to left scored Callaspo and Chris Carter's single to center scored Quentin.
The Beavers had a chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth but could do neither. After Bass walked the first two hitters in the inning, Jeff Bajenaru came on and walked Luke Carlin to load the bases. Bajenaru then hit Bobby Hill to score a run but Manny Alexander struck out, Terrmel Sledge popped out and Ben Johnson struck out looking to end the inning.
Tucson scored their seventh and final run on a Callaspo single in the eighth.
The Sidewinders and Beavers play game three of their series on Wednesday night at PGE Park. Right-hander Edgar Gonzalez (2-4 3.75) starts for Tucson against right-hander Eric Junge (4-5 5.02) for Portland. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
