Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Portland - Scott Hairston and Carlos Quentin each had a two run homer and Mike Schultz recorded the final six outs for his first save of the season as the Sidewinders won their ninth consecutive game, 4-3 over the Portland Beavers on Monday night at PGE Park. The Sidewinders maintained their three and a half game lead over Las Vegas in the Pacific Southern division.
Hairston put the Sidewinders on the board with a two run homer to left in the top of the fourth. The long ball was Hairston's 16th of the year and gave him 49 RBI for the season.
Quentin added his two run homer in the fifth to push the lead to 4-0.
The Beavers answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a two out double from Justin Leone off Tucson starter Dustin Nippert. Nippert (8-1) worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits and three earned runs. He walked three and struck out a season high eight batters.
Dirk Hayhurst took the loss in a spot start for Portland. Hayhurst (0-1) started for the injured Cesar Carillo and went 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and all four Tucson runs.
The Beavers cut the Sidewinders lead to 4-3 in the sixth. Termel Sledge had a two run single with the bases loaded but Mike Koplove escaped further damage by retiring Paul McAnulty and Ben Johnson.
Schultz worked a perfect eighth and retired three in a row after a leadoff error in the ninth to nail down the save.
The Sidewinders and Beavers play game two of their series on Tuesday night at PGE Park. Right-hander Adam Bass (2-0 3.09) starts for Tucson against righty Jack Cassel (2-3 6.08) for Portland. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:50.
