Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Alberto Callaspo (ky-AS-po) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and the Tucson Sidewinders pushed their season-long winning streak to 10 games by defeating the Portland Beavers 7-4 Tuesday night at PGE Park.
With the victory, the Sidewinders (41-25) improved to 6-0 against the Beavers, who have lost nine of their last 11 games overall.
Carlos Quentin was 3-for-4 with a two-run double and a walk, while Adam Bass (3-0) got the win for Tucson, yielding four runs on four hits and seven walks over five innings of work. Tony Pena notched his first save.
Jon Knott and Luke Carlin both drew three walks for the Beavers, who were out-hit 14-4 and failed log a base hit after the third inning.
Jack Cassel (2-4) gave up six runs on 11 hits in six innings to take the loss for Portland, which fell below .500 for the first time since May 2.
Cassel gave up hits to the first three batters he faced in the first as the Sidewinders got out to a quick 2-0 lead. Callaspo singled to lead things off and Stephen Drew doubled. Quentin then doubled home both base runners.
After Cassel struck out the side in order in the second, Callaspo and Drew set the table again in the third with a single and double respectively. Quentin drew a walk to load the bases, with an RBI single from Scott Hairston and a double play groundout upping Tucson's lead to 4-0.
The Beavers (32-33) got on the board when Manny Alexander singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning and scored when Terrmel Sledge punched a double down the left field line and Hairston misplayed the ball in left field for Tucson's fourth error of the series. Sledge later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Justin Leone.
After Knott and Carlin walked to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Alexander's sac fly trimmed the Beavers' deficit to a run. But Tucson went back to work in the fifth with RBI singles by Chris Young and Chris Carter giving the Sidewinders a 6-3 advantage.
The Beavers loaded the bases on three straight walks to start the bottom of the sixth, but could only manage one run in the frame when pinch-hitter Bobby Hill was hit by a pitch from reliever Jeff Bajenaru, who spelled Bass after he walked the bases full.
Tucson added a run in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Callaspo.
The Beavers play host to Tucson again Wednesday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Cassel flew out deep to left with the bases loaded to end a Beavers' threat in the bottom of the second ... Ryan Meaux came on in relief of Cassel in the seventh for his first appearance since spearheading the Beavers' first-ever perfect game on June 9 ... Leone played second base for the second straight night, just his fifth career appearance at the position. He made a nice sliding play in the hole to throw out Brian Barden in the eighth ... Ben Johnson batted third in the lineup for the first time this season with Portland ... Beavers hitting coach Jose Castro filled in as the interim manager, his first full-game, fill-in managerial duty since 2004 with Class AA Mobile.
