Redbirds shut out RedHawks

Memphis, Tenn. - The Memphis pitching staff turned in its' best performance of the season as the Redbirds blanked Oklahoma, 4-0 in front of 13,299 fans at AutoZone Park on Tuesday.

Chris Narveson was brilliant is his season debut for the Redbirds, tossing 6.2 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits in the Redbirds first shutout victory of the year. Memphis pitching yielded just four singles to the RedHawks on the night.

Derek Wathan roped a one-out triple to center field in the third inning and scored the first run of the game when the relay throw from shortstop Joaquin Arias hit Wathan sliding into third and rolled to the wall. Skip Schumaker followed with a single and John Nelson cranked his team-leading eleventh homer of the season to give Memphis a 3-0 advantage.

Wathan added his first home run as a Redbird, a solo shot to right field in the seventh inning, to reach the final margin, 4-0. He is hitting .375 with six extra-base hits in six games since joining the Redbirds.

Josh Kinney and Brian Falkenborg allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief for Memphis. The win broke a five-game losing streak for Redbirds at AutoZone Park.

Memphis will look to take control of the series tomorrow afternoon as John Webb (3-5) takes the ball for the Redbirds. Oklahoma will counter with right-hander Rob Tejeda (2-2). First pitch is slated for 1:10 p.m. CST.
