Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Dustin Nippert picked up his league-leading eighth win, and Carlos Quentin and Scott Hairston hit two-run homers as the Tucson Sidewinders held on for a 4-3 victory over the Portland Beavers Monday night at PGE Park.
The win stretched the Sidewinders' season-long winning streak to nine games and improved them to a perfect 5-0 against the Beavers this season on the heels of a four-game sweep at Tucson Electric Park last week.
Nippert (8-1), who had a personal seven-game winning streak snapped in his previous outing on June 2, held the Beavers (32-32) scoreless until the fifth. The right-hander struck out eight and wound up allowing three runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Mike Schultz worked the final two innings for his first save with the Sidewinders (40-25), who claim the top record in the Pacific Coast League.
Hairston, who was 3-for-5, opened the scoring with a two-run blast - his 16th of the season - in the fourth off Portland starter Dirk Hayhurst, who was making his Triple-A debut after being transferred from Class A Lake Elsinore earlier in the day.
Quentin, who also had three hits, upped the lead to 4-0 in the fifth with a two-run shot off Hayhurst, just clearing the wall in left for his sixth home run of the campaign.
Hayhurst, called up to take the place of scheduled starter Cesar Carrillo, allowed four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Carrillo was placed on the disabled list Monday for a second time this season with a strained right forearm.
The Beavers finally got to Nippert in the fifth when Paul McAnulty reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Justin Leone's RBI double. Nippert was taken out after hitting Manny Alexander with a pitch that loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Koplove entered the game and gave up a two-run single to Terrmel Sledge, reducing Tucson's lead to a run.
The Beavers play host to the Sidewinders again Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Hayhurst is slated to join Class AA Mobile on Tuesday after his one-start stint with the Beavers ... the Beavers have used 10 different starting pitchers this season ... with David Matranga and Bobby Hill out of Monday's lineup with tight hamstrings, Leone made his fourth career appearance at second base. Leone has played second, third base, right field and at DH this season ... Portland pitcher Tim Stauffer fouled out trying to lay down a sac bunt as a pinch-hitter with runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the sixth ... the Beavers committed a season-high three errors ... Ben Johnson struck out four times, a new high for a Portland batter this season.
