Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Starter Fernando Nieve turned in a strong performance and the Albuquerque Isotopes (44-33) broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh to capture a 4-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds (31-46) on Sunday night at Isotopes Park. The come-from-behind win marks only the seventh time the Isotopes have emerged victorious when trailing after the sixth inning.

With the contest knotted 2-2 in the seventh, Albuquerque broke the stalemate with back-to-back singles from Matt Angle and Joe Becker. Scott Van Slyke followed with an RBI double, his second two-bagger of the night, to put the Isotopes up 3-2. Memphis pitcher Amaury Rivas then intentionally walked Luis Cruz to load the bases and Tim Federowicz lifted a sac-fly to left that scored Becker from third and made the score 4-2.

Nieve kept the Nashville bats at bay throughout most of the game, walking none while allowing only two runs on eight scattered hits through 6.0 innings of work. Over a span of three frames, the right-hander retired nine of 10 batters, but was unfortunately saddled with the no-decision.

The Sounds drew first blood in the third when Edwin Maysonet, in his first game since returning from the Brewers, smashed a double down the left-field line. Logan Schafer then singled to left and stole second, but an errant throw to second from Federowicz sailed into the outfield and allowed Maysonet to dash home for the first run of the game. Nashville extended its lead one batter later with an RBI single from Andy Gonzalez that gave the visitors a 2-0 edge.

Albuquerque found the scoreboard in the fifth with a leadoff, solo shot from Tyler Henson that narrowed the deficit 2-1. The homer was only his third of the season, and the first time Henson has left the yard at Isotopes Park this year.

The 'Topes then tied the game in the sixth, beginning with consecutive singles from Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Henson. One batter later, pinch hitter Alex Castellanos plated the runner with an RBI ground rule double that hopped over the left field wall, ultimately preventing the go-ahead run from scoring and keeping the game locked in a 2-2 tie.

Following their two-run seventh, the 'Topes slammed the door on the Sounds as reliever Angel Guzman and closer Josh Wall (17) tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth respectively, preserving a 4-2 Isotopes victory.

Albuquerque and Nashville will battle in the third game of the series tomorrow night. 'Topes righty Will Savage (9-3, 5.15) will go for his tenth win against Sounds right-hander Seth McClung (1-8, 4.60) at 7:05 from Isotopes Park.

The 'Topes eight-game homestand continues tomorrow with an Adult Fun Run followed by a Business Persons Special on Tuesday. Tickets for any Isotopes game may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.abqisotopes.com or www.ticketmaster.com .
