DES MOINES, IOWA - Iowa starter Brooks Raley allowed five baserunners in seven strong innings as the Cubs upended the Express 2-1 in Monday afternoon's Pacific Coast League action. Iowa (33-45) snapped Round Rock's (35-43) season-high four-game road winning streak.
Iowa got on the board in the bottom of the first as Alfredo Amezaga smacked a one-out double off Express spot-starter Ben Snyder and Josh Vitters followed with a single to center to drive in the run. They added another in the third when Vitters touched up Snyder again for a two-out solo home run to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead.
Round Rock tried to respond but was shut down numerous times by Raley. The E-train managed just a fourth inning run thanks to a Brad Nelson walk and a Yangervis Solarte two-out RBI single.
Raley (4-2) notched the win for the Cubs. He picked up five strikeouts and walked one in seven frames of one-run ball. Jay Jackson spun a scoreless eighth inning for the Cubs and Rafael Dolis shut the door in the ninth to earn his third save.
Snyder (1-3) picked up the loss for the Express. He lasted four innings and allowed two runs on five hits and a walk and stuck out four. He was replaced in the fifth by Willie Eyre who ate up three innings in long relief and only allowed one hit and struck out three. Neal Cotts pitched a scoreless eighth.
Vitters paced Iowa with a pair of hits and both RBI. Amezaga (1-for-4) had the only other extra-base hit for the Cubs.
Solarte led the way for the Express with two hits and the only RBI. Nelson (1-for-3) scored the only run and picked up the only walk on the day.
Round Rock concludes its four-game series Tuesday at Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. CDT. Left-hander"ËMartin Perez (5-5, 4.59 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express opposite Cubs right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (1-2, 2.68 ERA).
