Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (39-38) held off a late rally by the Tacoma Rainiers (31-46) to hang on to a 5-4 win, sealing their third straight series win with their fourth straight win against the Rainiers and fifth straight win overall, which ties the longest winning streak by the Sky Sox this season.
Colorado Springs first baseman Chad Tracy led the way offensively for the Sox for a second straight game as he was a triple away from the cycle, going 3-for-4 with three RBI for his seventh straight game with a RBI as well as his seventh multi-hit performance in his last eight games. Tacoma led the game 1-0 with a run in the first inning but Tracy tied the ballgame in the third inning with a solo homer to left field, his fourth bomb of the season and second straight game with a round-tripper. In the fourth inning, Tracy knocked in two more runs on a double as part of the Sky Sox four-run fourth inning. Tracy has the second most RBI on the Sky Sox in the month of June with 20, and the third most hits this month with 29.
Sky Sox starter Carlos Torres (4-4, 4.33 ERA) earned his first win at Security Service Field since his first career start in Colorado Springs on April 18 by holding the Rainiers offense to only one run in five innings of work, the second straight game a Sox starter has limited Tacoma to a single run. Torres has held opponents to one run or less in seven of his twelve starts this season, and the win snaps a three-game streak of losses in home decisions for the Colorado Springs right-hander. Torres allowed only one baserunner past second base in the start.
Sky Sox relievers had not allowed a run in the first two game of the series with Tacoma, but the Rainiers broke a streak of 11.2 scoreless innings for Sox relievers against Tacoma with a three runs in the final two innings to trim the Colorado Springs lead to 5-4 on Tacoma shortstop Nick Franklin's RBI single in the ninth inning. With the tying run on first with two outs in the ninth, Sky Sox reliever Mike Ekstrom got Rainiers designated hitter Luis Jimenez to ground out to Tracy to lock up his first save of the season.
The five-game winning streak equals the Sox longest winning streak of the season, which occurred during their first homestand of the season back in April. In the series finale Colorado Springs will look for their first series sweep of the season, as the Sox are the only team in the Pacific Coast League to not have a sweep or be swept by any team. The Sky Sox will send out right-hander Rob Scahill (5-8, 5.96 ERA) and the Rainiers will counter with righty Blake Beaven (1-0, 3.00 ERA) as the Sox look to extend their win streak to six games at 7:05 p.m. MT.
