
Toledo Wrestles Division Lead From Cincinnati, 4-3

CINCINNATI - The Toledo Walleye won their seventh straight game and captured the North Division lead in a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night. Chris Robertson and Scooter Smith each had a goal and an assist for Toledo in the win.
There was no scoring in the first period, as Cincinnati had two solid scoring opportunities. The first came from a shot on the right wing side from Scott Reynolds and the second on a shot from the left side of the goal crease from Maxime Lacroix. The Cyclones had two power play chances but was unable to convert either. The shots favored Cincinnati, 12-8, in the term.
Toledo scored three times in the second period to grab a 3-1 edge after 40 minutes. The Walleye got their first goal at 2:19 of the stanza when Scooter Smith picked up his third of the season from former Cyclone Malcolm MacMillan. Cincinnati evened the scores at one each when Scott Reynolds slipped his eleventh score of the season just inside the left post at 4:14. Barret Ehgoetz and Hans Benson had the assists. Toledo grabbed the lead for good at 9:28 when Chris Robertson picked up his eighth goal of the season-a shorthanded tally-from Derek Nesbitt. The Walleye extended the lead when Dominic Osman netted his eighth score at 18:33. The shots favored Toledo, 13-8, in the period.
Cincinnati quickly knotted the game at three in the third period, as Brock Sheahan collected his first score as a Cyclone from Ehgoetz and Reynolds-at 2:41. The game was tied less than a minute and a half later when Matt Pierce collected his 14th lamplighter at 4:01 from Maxime Lacroix and Brett Motherwell. Toledo got the game winning goal from Justin Hodgman with his sixth goal from Scooter Smith at 7:43. The Cyclones had chances late to level the scores but were unable to capitalize. The shots in the period favored Cincinnati, 12-9, and for the game the Cyclones outshot the Walleye, 32-30.
Jordan Pearce picked up his seventh win of the season for Toledo stopping 29 shots, while Jeremy Smith stopped 26 shots while taking his sixth defeat. Cincinnati was zero for four on the power play. Toledo went zero for two with the man-advantage.
The crowd of 4586 pushed the Cyclones season attendance to 53,827-an average of 3844 per game. The Cyclones sit 13th in the ECHL in attendance, 72.5 percent ahead of last season's pace through 14 games. Cincinnati, which has finished first or second in attendance percentage improvement in each of the prior two seasons, has attracted more fans than it had through 20 games in 2008-09 (through January 23, 2009).
Cincinnati is now 17-10-1, while Toledo is 15-10-4. The Cyclones are on the road tomorrow with a 4pm tilt at Kalamazoo. The game can be heard on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com. It is the first game of a three game road trip for the club before returning to U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday, January 6 against Trenton.
