Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals announced on Saturday the acquisition of defenseman R.J. Anderson from the Johnstown Chiefs and the signing of winger Mike Sgroi and defenseman Dean Petiot.

Anderson's acquisition completes a deal the Jackals made on Dec. 17 with the Johnstown Chiefs in which the Jackals gained winger Jarrett Konkle and future considerations in exchange for winger Chanse Fitzpatrick. In his rookie season, Anderson is tied for third among ECHL defensemen with 19 points and fifth among blue-liners with 14 assists. The Lino Lakes, Minn. native skated four seasons for the University of Minnesota (NCAA), and played in all 37 games his senior season. Anderson is currently inactive with the flu.

The signing of Mike Sgroi brings a familiar face back to Elmira. Sgroi has played with the Jackals in two previous seasons and scored at a point per game with the Jackals in 17 games in 2008-2009. A well-traveled veteran, Sgroi becomes the most experienced member of the Jackals in terms of games played and age, having come into this season with 451 regular season games played as a pro.

"Mike can score and intimidate and fits right into our roster. With Chaz Johnson and Brennan Turner returning soon, along with the addition of Sgroi, we'll get about 700 pounds of muscle added to our lineup," Jackals coach Steve Martinson said.

Defenseman Dean Petiot comes to Elmira by way of the Huntsville Havoc (SPHL), where he has a +15 in his rookie campaign. Petiot's brother Richard has 13 games of NHL experience in his career and is currently with the Rockford IceHogs (AHL).

"Dean is a tough stay-at-home defenseman, and his +15 with Huntsville shows what kind of a player he is," Martinson said.

The Jackals host the Reading Royals on Saturday night at 7:35 p.m. at First Arena. For tickets call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto Ticketmaster.com.
