St. Paul Saints News Release

TOLEDO, OH - A year ago the St. Paul Saints visited Fifth Third Field trailing the Toledo Mud Hens by a half game in the standings with a month to go. They were promptly swept in a six-game series by Toledo and never got close to first place again. The Saints entered Tuesday night riding a three-game winning streak and the Mud Hens at 3-8 on the season. None of that mattered as the Saints were shutout 11-0 at Fifth Third Field.

Cole Sands got the start for the Saints after two superb outings to begin his 2022 campaign, but he never got out of the second inning. The Mud Hens took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kody Clemens doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Derek Hill.

The Mud Hens exploded for four in the second as they started the inning with four consecutive hits. Ryan Kreidler led off with an infield single to second. Ryan Lavarnway singled to center putting runners at the corners. Jack López made it 2-0 with an RBI single. Jacob Robson's two run triple to left-center put the Mud Hens up 4-0. A one out double by Zack Short capped off the scoring in the inning making it 5-0. After Clemens lined out to first, Hill walked and that was the night for Sands who lasted just 1.2 innings, the second shortest outing of his career, allowing five runs, tying a career high, while walking one. He didn't strike anyone out for the first time in his career.

The bullpen wasn't much better as no reliever threw a clean inning. In the third, the Mud Hens collected an unearned run off Wladimir Pinto. With two outs and nobody on, López singled to right-center. On a 3-2 pitch to Robson, Wladimir Pinto was called for a time clock violation and Robson was awarded ball four. John Velente then reached on an error by third baseman Jose Miranda that allowed López to score increasing the lead to 6-0.

For the fourth consecutive inning the Mud Hens scored a run, this time off Jovani Moran. With one out, Hill walked and went to third on a single from Josh Lester. An RBI groundout from Kreidler put the Saints in a 7-0 hole.

The Mud Hens continued to pour it on in the sixth putting up a three spot off Jordan Gore. Clemens led off with an infield single to second. Hill doubled off the center field wall putting runners at second and third. Lester followed with a two-run double giving the Mud Hens a 9-0 lead. With one out, Lavarnway doubled down the right field line scoring Lester making it 10-0.

The final run came in the eighth off of Ryan Mason. He walked the first two hitters he faced. With one out, Kreidler hit a grounder that tipped off Mason's glove to the second baseman Daniel Robertson. He tossed to second for the out, but Royce Lewis' throw to first tipped off Caleb Hamilton's glove and went into foul territory allowing Lester to score for the final run of the game.

Offensively, the Saints managed just five base runners: a leadoff double by Jose Miranda, a leadoff single in the third by Jermaine Palacios, a two-out walk to Jake Cave in the third, a leadoff single to Mark Contreras in the seventh, and a two-out walk to Contreras in the ninth.

The loss is the largest shutout loss for the Saints in Triple-A franchise history.

The same two teams meet in game two of the six-game series on Wednesday night at 5:35 p.m. (central). The Saints send RHP Mario Sanchez (0-0, 4.50) to the mound against Mud Hens RHP Chase Anderson (0-0, 4.05). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
