Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (7-5) hit four home runs to beat the Louisville Bats (3-10) by a score of 7-2, Tuesday at Louisville Slugger Field.
Through three innings, Iowa and Louisville were both held scoreless, combining for just four hits. That changed in the fourth, when Jared Young and Brennen Davis went back-to-back with solo home runs, giving Iowa a 2-0 lead.
Young hit another home run in the fifth, this time a two-run shot, doubling the I-Cubs lead. Robert Gsellman and Eric Stout did their part, keeping Louisville off the board through seven combined innings.
Gsellman made his second start of the year with Iowa, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. He was followed by Stout who spun 3.0 scoreless frames, striking out five along the way.
Each team scored one in the eighth with solo home runs, the I-Cubs off the bat of Alfonso Rivas and the Bats from Trey Amburgey. Ildemaro Vargas had an RBI double followed by an RBI single from Young to grow Iowa's lead to 7-1.
Louisville got a run back in the ninth against Stephen Gonsalves, but that would be all he would allow as the I-Cubs took the first game of the series by a final score of 7-2.
POSTGAME NOTES:
