Titans Drop Fourth Straight

November 9, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the Reading Royals, 2-1, on home ice Friday night. It was the Titans third consecutive loss to Reading.

The Royals (5-5-0-1, 11 pts) took the first two contests last weekend, one in Trenton and one in Reading, 4-2 and 2-1 respectively. The Titans (5-5, 10 pts) have now lost their last four contests after reeling off four straight victories to start the season.

After a scoreless first, Yannick Tifu broke through for Reading early in the second, beating Scott Wedgewood with a low wrist shot from just inside the right circle. The intensity picked up through the rest of the second, with the teams trading body blows in the forms of both scoring chances and big hits.

Wedgewood, who finished with 13 saves on 14 shots and earned no decision, was involved in a collision midway through the second when Andrew Conboy crashed into his own goal after getting tangled up with a Reading player. Wedgewood finished the second period but did not return to the ice or the Titans' bench for the third.

Niko Hovinen (1-2, 6 saves) took over goaltending duties for Trenton for the remainder of the contest and took the loss.

The Titans came out strong to start the third, tying the game just a minute into the period on a Bryan Haczyk's third of the season - a wrist shot from just inside the right hash mark that beat Reading netminder Philipp Grubauer (4-3, 24 saves) low to the stick side.

It didn't take long for a Reading response though, as Kirk McDonald put a lazer over Hovinen's left shoulder - and just under the crossbar - just two minutes later. It was all the offense Reading would need for the victory, despite being outshot by Trenton, 25-21.

Neither side was able to cash in on special teams, with the Titans going 0-for-2 and Reading finishing 0-for-3 on the power play. The Titans extended their perfect penalty-kill streak to 19 consecutive kills. Coincidentally, they have also kept the Royals power play off of the board in their last 19 head-to-head opportunities.

The Titans won't have to wait long for another shot at their rivals, as the teams will clash tomorrow, and Sunday, at the Sovereign Center in Reading. Both games are set for a 7:05 p.m. face off. The Titans will finally get another opponent next weekend, as they stay on the road for two in Elmira, starting with a 7:05 contest on Friday the 16th.

As always, all Titans game can be heard on 107.7FM The Bronc, home of the Titans, or online at 1077thebronc.com.
