Elmira Jackals News Release
ESTERO, Fla. - The Elmira Jackals dropped a 5-3 decision to the Florida Everblades on Friday night in the fourth game of their six-game road trip. The loss moved the Jackals' record to 6-4-0 on the season.
For the first time on their southern swing the Jackals were able to pick up the first goal of the game. Rookie Darren Kramer potted his second goal in as many games with an unassisted tally at 6:06. Working the forecheck with Rob Bellamy and Jordan Pietrus, Kramer stole an outlet pass and wristed a high and hard shot past John Muse. The goal was just the second unassisted goal for the Jackals this season. Just over eight minutes later Elmira had a chance to double its lead with its first power play of the night, but Muse made some sharp saves to keep Elmira at bay. Marc Cheverie made eight saves in the session to keep Elmira in front heading into the second.
Despite not cashing in on an early second period power play, the Jackals pushed their lead to 2-0 when a Matt Campanale point shot beat Muse high to the glove side. It was Campanale's first goal of the season with the assists credited to Louie Caporusso and Rob Bellamy. Alex Hutchings pulled Florida within one at 11:50 on a wrap around shot that bounced off of a skate at the crease and through Cheverie's pads. Elmira had some hard work to do to preserve the lead when it was faced with a 1:33 5-on-3 against. The Jackals dodged that bullet, but back at full strength Hutchings netted his second of the game to tie the score with 1:38 remaining in the period.
When the scene shifted to the third period the Everblades pulled away from the Jackals with three tallies. The first came from Brayden Irwin on the power play at 5:54 to break the tie. Trevor Bruess followed with what proved to be the game winner on a wrist shot from the right wing circle at 11:30. Elmira brought the deficit back to one on a hard-working goal by Jack Downing. After his initial shot created a rebound, and a mad scramble in the crease, Downing pushed the puck through a maze of bodies into the net. Caporusso and Jean Bourbeau assisted. Hutchings capped his hat trick, though, nearly three minutes later and dashed the Jackals' hopes of a come back.
Cheverie finished with 22 saves on the night while the Jackals were 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
