Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The Fort Wayne TinCaps split a doubleheader against the West Michigan Whitecaps, Sunday at Fifth Third Ballpark. RHP Simon Castro led the way in a 3-1 victory in Game 1, then the offense was stifled in a 4-0 loss in Game 2.
Castro allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work. His scoreless streak, which started on August 13th , ended at 17 innings when he allowed a run in the 5th inning. Castro has now won his last three consecutive starts, beginning with a seven-inning no- hitter on August 18th .
The TinCaps got on the board in Game 1 in the 4th when Justin Baum lifted a sacrifice fly.
In the 5th , Allan Dykstra singled home Kevin Hansen to make it 2-0 and Cody Decker followed with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 3-0.
West Michigan scored in the bottom of the 5th on a sacrifice fly by Alden Carrithers, but Castro worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam with just the one run scoring.
Castro (10-6) picked up the win and RHP Brad Brach nabbed his 32nd save with a perfect 7th
inning. West Michigan RHP Victor Larez (5-9) was saddled with the loss.
The TinCaps were held to just three hits in the nightcap as they were shut out for the 4th time this year. They loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the 2nd on a single, catcher's interference and an error, but could not come up with the clutch hit.
West Michigan plated the first run when Gustavo Nunez ripped a ball over the center fielder's head in the bottom of the 3rd . He raced all the way around for an inside-the-park home run against Fort Wayne RHP Dexter Carter.
The Whitecaps blew it open with three runs in the 4th . Luis Salas smacked a two-out, two-run double into the right-field corner and Angel Flores snapped an 0-for-18 skid with an RBI single to left to make it 4-0.
Carter (1-4) took the loss. Whitecaps RHP Tyler Conn (6-3) received the win in relief. The TinCaps are now to 88-45 for the season, 43-20 in the second half. West Michigan moved to 79-54 on the year, 36-27 for the half.
Fort Wayne finishes the four-game series against the Whitecaps on Monday. Fort Wayne RHP Erik Davis (14-6) gets the start against West Michigan RHP Brayan Villareal (5-4) in a 7:00pm start.
