Hawks Held to Three Hits Again
August 30, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - For the third straight game, the South Bend Silver Hawks were held to just three hits in a loss to the Great Lakes Loons. After being shut out in the first two games of the series, South Bend did score twice but fell by a 4-2 final on Sunday afternoon.
The Silver Hawks got the scoring started in the top of the fourth, plating a run for the first time after 24 scoreless innings dating back to Thursday night. Justin Parker walked with one out, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on Alfredo Marte's single for the 1-0 lead. Marte's RBI was his team leading 65th of the season.
The Loons took the lead on South Bend starter Eric Smith (ND) in the bottom of the fifth. After a Nick Buss double, Anthony Hatch homered to right for the 2-1 lead. Those would be the only runs allowed by Smith in his 4.1 innings on the mound.
South Bend tied the game against reliever Robert Boothe (WP, 2-3) in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Marte doubled down the left field line for his fifth hit of the series. Clayton Conner ripped a ball to first that Jerry Sands couldn't field for an error, allowing Marte to score for the 2-2 tie.
However, South Bend reliever Bryan Woodall (LP, 3-5) ran out of steam. After retiring the first seven batters he faced, Woodall allowed a two out infield single to Hatch in the seventh inning. A walk to Kyle Russell moved Hatch to second, and Alfredo Silverio's RBI single brought him home for a 3-2 lead.
Sands led off the eighth with a solo home run off of Woodall, putting the final margin at 4-2.
Of the nine hits South Bend has in the series, five of them belong to Marte. A.J. Pollock also singled on Sunday, as the only other base hit for the Hawks.
Cole St. Clair (SV, 14) pitched a perfect ninth for the save after Jordan Pratt (ND) had retired the side in order in the eighth inning.
The series concludes with game four Monday evening at 7:05 PM Eastern Time at Dow Diamond. RHP Ryan Cook (11-9, 3.25 ERA) will start for South Bend, while Great Lakes counters with RHP Bobby Blevins (9-10, 4.16 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
