Bandits 'Stock' Up with Draft Picks

August 30, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Just four days after 19th overall pick Shelby Miller joined the River Bandits, the St. Louis Cardinals' second-round pick from the 2009 draft, Robert Stock, is also heading to the Quad Cities.

The 19-year-old catcher was drafted by the Cardinals with the 67th overall pick out of the University of Southern California, and has spent his first 41 games as a professional with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League. He hit .322 with seven homers and 24 runs batted in for Johnson City, boasting a .550 slugging percentage, nine doubles and 25 runs scored. He is scheduled to join the River Bandits on Sunday but it is unclear whether he will be available for the doubleheader in Clinton.

Stock hit the prospect radar as a 15-year-old when he was named Baseball America's Youth Player in the Year in 2005, and made headlines a year later when he skipped his senior season of high school to enroll early at USC. He played both ways as a Trojan, impressing pro scouts with his defensive skills as well as his bat and arm. Offensively, his best season came as a sophomore in 2008 when he hit .299 with four homers and 22 RBI. On the mound, his career 3.38 ERA also featured 128 strikeouts over 117.1 innings of work. Though some teams interested in drafting Stock wanted him to pitch, the 6-foot, 175-pounder has started his pro career committed to being a full-time offensive player.
