Whitecaps Split Twin Bill

COMSTOCK PARK, MI -Gustavo Nunez put on a personal highlight show in Game #2 of a doubleheader as the West Michigan Whitecaps rallied to split with Ft. Wayne Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Ft. Wayne won the first game behind righthander Simon Castro(10-6, 3.48). He went 5.2 innings, allowed one run, 3 hits, walked one and struck out five. Brad Brach picked up his league leading 32nd save with a perfect 7th inning. Allan Dykstra was 2-3 and drove in the eventual game winning run with a single in the fifth that scored Kevin Hansen.

Whitecaps starter Luke Putkonen started and threw one pitch. TinCaps manager Doug Dascenzo noticed

Putkonen wasn't listed on the lineup card and the umpires removed him from the game. Victor Larez

(5-9, 3.96) went 4 innings in relief and allowed one unearned run in 4 innings but took the loss.

In the nightcap, Nunez ignited the crowd with an inside-the-park home run to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 in the third. It was the first inside-the-park homerun at Fifth Third Ballpark since Luis Sabino hit one on July 3, 2004 and the first for a Whitecaps player since Cory Middleton hit one in Dayton on September 2, 2006. Nunez also made two highlight reel defensive plays in the field to lead the Whitecaps victory.

A 2-out, 2-run RBI double by Luis Salas and an RBI single by Angel Flores round out the scoring for the Whitecaps. Rob Waite started for the Whitecaps and gave up only 3 hits in four innings. Tyler Conn (6-3, 3.44) pitched three scoreless innings to get the win. Dexter Carter (1-4, 12.86) started and took the loss for Ft. Wayne.

Whitecaps manager was ejected in the 2nd inning for arguing a close play at second base. The final game of the series is Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. Game time is 7pm.
