Loons Win Fourth Straight
August 30, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons won their fourth consecutive game Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond, a 4-2 decision over the South Bend Silver Hawks in front of 5,053 fans. The win guarantees that the Loons will matchup with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the first round of the Midwest League playoffs, with the first game on September 9 at Dow Diamond and September 10 and 11 (if necessary) in Comstock Park, MI.
In the win, Loons pitchers allowed just three South Bend hits, the fourth consecutive game in which the Loons have held their opponent to exactly three hits.
Josh Walter started for the Loons and surrendered a two-out single to Alfredo Marte in the fourth inning to snap the Loons pitchers' scoreless streak at 32 2/3 innings. Great Lakes had not allowed a run since a fifth-inning, two-run home run by Jaff Decker Wednesday and were seeking their fourth consecutive shutout, which would have tied a Midwest League record.
Trailing 1-0, Anthony Hatch put the Loons ahead with his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot on his 26th birthday.
The Silver Hawks tied the game in the sixth inning with an unearned run against reliever Robert Boothe. But in the seventh, Alfredo Silverio gave the Loons the lead for good with a single up the middle on an 0-2 count scoring Hatch, who had singled.
Jerry Sands gave the Loons an insurance run in the eighth with a solo home run, his fifth with the Loons and 19th of the season.
Walter was solid in a no-decision, allowing just the one run in five innings. Boothe (2-3) recorded the win with two relief innings. He did not allow an earned run, striking out three. After a scoreless eighth by Jordan Pratt, Cole St. Clair closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, recording his 14th save of the season.
The Loons seek the series sweep Monday night at Dow Diamond at 7:05pm. Monday's pitching matchup features right-hander Bobby Blevins (9-10, 4.16 ERA) for the Loons against righty Ryan Cook (11-9, 3.25). It's Garage Sale Night, with unwanted items from the Loon Loft and the Loons' marketing prize closet at reduced prices for fans during the game.
The game also features a special Monday Dollar Family Feast Night, presented by Chemical Bank, with $1 prices on hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and 16 oz. Coca-Cola products. Tickets start at $6 and are available at Dow Diamond, by calling 989-837-BALL or by visiting Loons.com. Tickets are also available for Loons' September 9 playoff game against West Michigan, also a 7:05pm game. All playoff games will feature the Dollar Family Feast Night promotion, too.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
