The Peoria Chiefs pounded out 14 runs in the first four innings en route to a 16-5 rout of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Every starting Peoria position player had at least one hit as Rebel Ridling went 4-6 with a double and 4 RBI and Nelson Perez was 5-6 with two doubles.
Kernels starter Will Smith (9-5) was touched for 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits over 3 IP as he struck out two and walked one. Peoria starter Jeff Antigua (3-0) picked up the win, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out five over six innings and Josh Whitlock threw three perfect innings for his first save.
Gabe Jacobo gave the Kernels a spark, going 2-4 with two doubles and 3 RBI. Angel Castillo hit a two run HR in the sixth inning as Darwin Perez continues to raise his average, going 2-4 with two runs scored.
The playoff bound Kernels wrap up this eight game home stand on Monday with a 6:35 pm game with the Chiefs. Gates open at 5:30 pm and the Kernels Little Sluggers will have their autograph party with the players, which was rescheduled from last Wednesday. Tickets may be ordered on-line at www.kernels.com
After a day off on Tuesday, the Kernels hit the road for their final road trip of the 2009 MWL regular season, with three games in Appleton, WI against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
