The Peoria Chiefs came out with bats blazing as they struck for 10 runs in the first four innings and cruised to an 11-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kernels starter Ryan Chaffee (8-7) was roughed up for 10 runs (nine earned) on eight hits over just three innings.
The Chiefs scored six runs in the fourth inning with the big blow, a grand slam by Kyler Burke. Burke finished the game 2-4 with a triple and 6 RBI, as Ryan Flaherty was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Peoria starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx (7-1) held the Kernels to a run on five hits and struck out six over 6.2 IP.
Dwayne Bailey went 2-4 and scored the Kernels only run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning. Darwin Perez continues to swing a hot bat, going 3-4 with a triple and Angel Castillo was 2-4 as the Kernels had eight hits. Christian Scholl worked three innings of relief and struck out six and Francis Cabrera worked a scoreless ninth.
Game three between the Kernels and Peoria is Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm as its 104.5 KDAT Sunday Family Day and the Kernels Summer Reading Program 1,000 minute Reader Recognition Day. Gates open at 1:00 pm.
