TinCaps move past Great Lakes in standings

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Cole Tyrell racked up four RBIs and the Fort Wayne bullpen went 5.1 strong innings in a 10-7 victory over the Great Lakes Loons, Saturday at Parkview Field. The win pushed the TinCaps past the Loons in the Eastern Division playoff chase.

Great Lakes pitchers issued 11 walks; seven of the batters who walked eventually scored.

The Loons took an early lead thanks to back-to-back doubles to start the game by Leon Landy and Casio Grider. Nick Akins later drove in another run to make it a 2-0 game.

The TinCaps tied it in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-out rally. Back-to-back walks and an infield single by Connor Powers loaded the bases, then Tyler Stubblefield and Tyrell took RBI walks.

In the second, Fort Wayne exploded for six runs. Rymer Liriano stroked an RBI single to put the TinCaps ahead. Later in the frame, Tyrell cranked a three-run blast over the Home Run Porch to balloon the lead to 8-2.

Great Lakes clawed back into the game. In the fourth, Michael Pericht and Casio Grider smacked two-run doubles to cut the lead to 8-6. Jon Garcia hit a solo homer in the fifth to close the gap to a single run.

The TinCaps blew it back open without a hit in the seventh inning. B.J. Guinn and Rico Noel drew walks and eventually came around to score to make it 10-7.

RHP Stiven Osuna (1-1) was the winning pitcher as he, Robert Lara, Chris Franklin and Kevin Quackenbush allowed just one run in a combined 5.1 innings; Quackenbush notched his third save despite loading the bases in the ninth. Loons LHP Greg Wilborn (2-2) absorbed the loss, walking six in an inning-plus.

The TinCaps improved to 19-15 in the half, 49-54 for the season. Great Lakes' losing streak extended to five games as the Loons fell to 18-16 since the all-star break, 57-46 on the year.

The TinCaps and Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) continue the three-game series Sunday at 3:05 p.m. at Parkview Field TinCaps RHP Keyvius Sampson (8-2) gets the starting nod against Loons LHP Ryan Christenson (7-7).
