D-Backs Acquire Marquis from Nationals for Walters

(PHOENIX) - The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis from the Washington Nationals for minor league infielder Zachary Walters, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Marquis, 32, was 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA (53 ER in 120.2 IP) and .283 opponents average with 39 walks and 71 strikeouts in 20 starts for the Nationals. The Nationals are 9-5 in his last 14 starts and 13-7 in his 20 starts this season. Since Sept. 1, 2010, he has thrown 17 quality starts in his last 25 starts. Over parts of 12 Major League seasons with the Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and Nationals, he is 104-97 with a 4.52 ERA (835 ER in 1664.1 IP) and .270 opponents average with 641 walks and 969 strikeouts in 323 games (264 starts). A 2009 National League All-Star with the Cardinals, he recorded 10 or more wins in six consecutive seasons from 2004-09 and won the NL Silver Slugger Award in 2005 with the Cardinals. Marquis was signed by the Nationals as a free agent on Dec. 22, 2009.

Walters, 21, hit .302 (109-for-361) with 27 doubles, 6 triples, 9 home runs and 56 RBI in 97 games with Single-A South Bend this season. Over parts of two seasons in the D-backs organization, he batted .302 (192-for-636) with 45 doubles, 10 triples, 13 home runs and 99 RBI in 166 games. Walters was selected by the D-backs in the ninth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the D-backs transferred infielder Stephen Drew to the 60-day disabled with a fractured right ankle. The D-backs will announce a corresponding move for the 25-man roster when Marquis reports to the team.
