Four-Game Streak Snapped by Giansanti, Chiefs

Clinton, IA - A triple into the right-center gap by Peoria's Anthony Giansanti scored the winning run in the top of the ninth as the Peoria Chiefs sent the Clinton LumberKings to a 3-1 loss on Saturday night at Alliant Energy Field. Giansanti later scored for insurance and the Peoria bullpen kept the Kings off the board in the bottom of the ninth, snapping Clinton's season-best four-game winning streak.

The LumberKings took an early lead against Chiefs' right-hander Matt Loosen as Stefen Romero blasted a solo home run to the berm in left to lead off the second inning. Kalian Sams singled and reached third in the same inning, but Loosen got John Hicks to line out to center, ending the inning.

Right-hander Taijuan Walker limited the Chiefs to just a hit and three walks while striking out seven over 5.0 innings, but was taken off the hook for the win in the sixth as right-hander Matt Bischoff yielded a double to Arismendy Alcantara and a game-tying single to Taiwan Easterling. Bischoff (BS, 3) stranded Easterling at third base to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Left-hander Jon Hesketh tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and right-hander Tyler Burgoon struck out Dustin Geiger to strand Alcantara at second in the eighth. Burgoon (L, 5-5), however, would give up a leadoff single to Jones in the ninth and then allow Giansanti's triple into the right-center gap. Two batters later, Elliot Soto lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Giansanti.

Peoria right-hander Patrick Francescon defied his 8.36 ERA as he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of Loosen. Francescon (W, 1-3) gave up only one hit, a Matt Browning one-out single in the seventh. Right-hander Daniel Berlind (S, 1) then worked a perfect bottom of the ninth to preserve the win for the Chiefs.

Romero went 1-for-3 with the home run, his team-lead-tying 13th of the year. The 1-3 spots in the LumberKings' lineup went a combined 0-for-11 with four strikeouts.

Alcantara went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Giansanti went 1-for-4 with the triple and game-winning RBI.

The LumberKings (18-16) continue the three-game set with Peoria (11-23) tomorrow afternoon, first pitch at Alliant Energy Field scheduled for 2:00 PM. Left-hander Tony Butler (1-1, 3.04) is scheduled to start for Clinton against Chiefs' left-hander Austin Kirk (5-7, 3.54).
