Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - In what has been touted as a possible first round playoff series preview, the Kane County Cougars struck for five runs in the first inning and held on to defeat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-4 Saturday evening in Davenport.
A dropped fly ball by Nick Longmire allowed Angel Franco to score and give Kane County the early 1-0 advantage. Cheslor Cuthbert's single and a walk to Jake Kuebler loaded the bases for Orlando Calixte who promptly put the ball onto the left field lawn for his second home run and first grand slam of the season. His towering drive leaving Bandits left fielder Michael Swinson stuck in his tracks as the ball cleared the fence. The 5-0 lead in the first inning would have to hold up as QC pitching allowed Kane County just three singles the rest of the way.
The River Bandits crept back into the game, scoring a single run in the third, two more in the fourth and another run in the fifth but could get no closer. Santiago Garrido notched his first win of the season after three straight losses. Jason Mitchell pitched three innings of two-hit ball and Chas Byrne allowed just one ninth inning hit while striking out the side to capture his eighth save in nine chances. The River Bandits placed the tying run at third to open the sixth, had the equalizer at second with two out in both the eighth and ninth but were thwarted in each instance.
Both the Cougars and River Bandits began play with 20-13 Midwest League Western Division second half records and in a first place tie. Quad Cities, by virtue of being the first half runner-up in division play, is scheduled to meet the second half division champion in first round post-season action.
The Cougars and River Bandits continue the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2 CT. Greg Billo (8-2, 1.48) will face Boone Whiting (2-1, 1.88). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 1:45 p.m.
