Bandits allow five first-inning runs on way to loss

The Quad Cities River Bandits allowed five first-inning runs to the Kane County Cougars and were never able to recover in the 5-4 loss Saturday night in front of 3,874 fans at Modern Woodmen Park.
Bandit starter Zach Russell (L, 5-8) allowed five runs in the first inning, one was an unearned tally. Angel Franco (2-for-4) scored from third when Bandit right fielder Nick Longmire committed an error on the fly to right. The Cougers then loaded the bases and they capitalized with Orland Calixte's (1-for-3) first pitch grand slam to give the Cougars an early 5-0 lead.
Offensively, the Bandits chipped away at the early deficit, but were never able to take the lead. Oscar Taveras (1-for-4) drove in the first run for the Bandits when he grounded out to first scoring Ronny Gil (1-for-3). Chris Edmondson (1-for-3) hit a two-RBI double in the fourth inning to put the Bandits within two runs.
The Bandits scored one more run in the fifth inning when Victor Sanchez singled scoring Longmire (2-for-5). Michael Swinson (2-for-3) tripled to begin the sixth but was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball to third base for the second out of the inning. Quad Cities also threatened in the ninth when Longmire hit a one-out single, but the Bandits failed to rally.
Russell was opposed by Cougars starter Santiago Garrido (W, 1-3). The right-hander went five innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Garrido walked two and struck out two on his was to his first victory. Chas Byrne (S, 8) entered the game in the ninth inning and allowed one hit on his way to the save.
The Bandits continue the series with the Kane County Cougars tomorrow when right-hander Boone Whiting (2-1, 1.88) opposes Cougars righty Greg Billo (8-2, 1.48). First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Modern Woodmen Park on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday. The matinee will also feature a River Bandits Cowbell giveaway sponsored by River Valley Cooperative. It's also Nestle Purina Dog Days of Summer and Monkey Joe's Kids Run the Bases.
