South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - On a day when all-star shortstop Zach Walters was traded to the Washington Nationals for Major League pitcher Jason Marquis, the South Bend Silver Hawks could have used the extra offense in a 6-4 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday evening at Coveleski Stadium.
The news of the trade broke about an hour before game time, and Walters was pulled from the starting lineup where he was scheduled to DH. All the details began to emerge over the next hour as the Silver Hawks prepared for the series opener.
Perhaps still rattled by the news, pitcher Tyler Green (LP, 3-7) struggled in allowing four runs on seven hits in the first inning. The Silver Hawks found themselves down big early as Green lost his fifth straight outing.
Green would settle down and allow only one more run over the next four innings, but the damage was too much to overcome.
South Bend did chip away, scoring twice in the first, once in the fourth, and once in the seventh to make the game interesting. Gerson Montilla, Ender Inciarte, and Matt Helm all had two hits and a RBI in the game to bring the Silver Hawks within two for much of the contest, but they never were able to get over the hump.
Multiple Silver Hawks extended hitting streaks in the contest, with Helm pushing his seven and Montilla and Roberto Ortiz bumping their streaks up to five games, all tying personal season highs.
Brian Flynn (WP, 3-1) allowed three runs over 6.0 innings to earn his third win of the season and his second and South Bend. Jade Todd (ND) and Michael Torrealba (SV, 4) closed it out for the Whitecaps.
The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps will play game two on Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 PM Eastern Time first pitch. Gates open at 12 noon for the matchup that will feature RHP Mike Bolsinger (3-5, 3.18 ERA) against RHP Victor Larez (1-1, 7.20 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
