TinCaps Clobber Captains
April 10, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps clobbered the Lake County Captains, 14-4, on Sunday at Parkview Field. All nine batters in the TinCaps lineup produced at least one hit in the onslaught, as the team tallied 18 in all.
The route to the route was rather unconventional. The Captains, just like they had the previous three nights, struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning and another in the second to stake themselves to a 4-0 lead.
Fort Wayne (2-2), however, bounced back in a big way. Left-handed batting first baseman Brad Zunica crushed a two-run, opposite-field home run to slice the deficit in half in the home second.
In the third, catcher Austin Allen came through with a two-out, two-run single to tie it, 4-4. After designated hitter Ty France singled, Zunica followed with an RBI single to put the TinCaps on top, 5-4. From there, they wouldn't look back.
The home team exploded for six runs in the fourth and then a two-out unearned run in the fifth and two more unearned runs with two outs in the sixth.
Lake County (2-2) starter Matt Esparza (L, 0-1) allowed nine runs over 3 1/3 innings.
Shortstop Ruddy Giron shined with a game-high four hits, including two doubles. He drove in a pair and scored three times.
Meanwhile, Allen went 3-for-4 with a double, which actually lowered his batting average through four games to .786 (11-for-14). On Sunday he had two RBIs and scored three runs. Allen's 11 hits so far are two more than anyone else in the Midwest League.
Coincidentally, it's Zunica (3-for-4, four RBIs Sunday) who's next on the list, as he's 9-for-15 (.600).
Not to be lost by the stellar offensive production, three TinCaps relievers teamed for 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Taylor Cox (W, 1-0) twirled 2 1/3 innings out of the pen, while Logan Allen (3 innings) and Emmanuel Ramirez (2.0 innings) followed. Starter Jake Nix went the first 1 2/3 innings.
