Clinton LumberKings News Release

CLINTON, IA - The LumberKings (2-1) took advantage of a fortunate call in the seventh, scoring the tying and go ahead runs in that frame to scratch out a 4-3 win over the Kane County Cougars (1-2) in the series finale.

With the Cougars up 3-2 in the seventh, Chris Mariscal tripled with one out to right center field. The next man up was Rayder Ascanio, who with the infield in poked a single down the first base line to score Mariscal to tie the game. Then the controversial play happened, as Luis Liberato appeared to have grounded into an inning ending 3-6-3 double play. But field umpire Ryan Wilhelms called that shortstop Raymel Flores was off the bag when first baseman Trevor Mitsui's throw reached him, and in the midst of the confusion, Ascanio went to third. That set the stage for Ricky Eusebio, who smoked the first pitch he saw from Brody Greer into right center, bringing home Ascanio to give the LumberKings the lead.

Darin Gillies picked up the win in relief, going two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Joey Strain came on in the eighth and retired all six batters he faced to pick up his second save of the season.

Kane County got started fast in the first, as Zach Nehrir doubled down the left field line with one out. Jason Morozowski followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners and with Luke Lowery up, catcher Arturo Nieto lost the handle on a pitch, scoring Nehrir from third to make it 1-0 Cougars.

The LumberKings would strike back in the bottom half of the frame, as Luis Liberato and Ricky Eusebio reached on singles to bring up Braden Bishop. With runners at the corners, Bishop hit into a fielder's choice that scored Liberato to tie the game at one.

LumberKings starter Kyle Wilcox was effective after the first but ran into trouble in the fourth, as a single from Trevor Mitsui and a double from Josh Anderson brought home two runs to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. Wilcox completed five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out three.

Clinton struck back with a bases loaded walk against Cougars starter Carlos Hernandez in the fifth, but didn't muster up anything else until the seventh. Eusebio has a three game hitting streak to start the season, and has five hits in his past two games.

The LumberKings open up a series with the Beloit Snappers tomorrow night at Ashford University Field. Lefty Nick Wells takes the mound for Clinton, while righty Angel Duno will go for the Snappers. Tickets can be purchased by calling 563-242-0727 or by visiting the ticketing page at www.lumberkings.com.
