Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, KY - Wrapping up a four-game season-opening series against the Dayton Dragons, the Bowling Green Hot Rods held on to clinch the series victory with a 8-7 win on Sunday afternoon.

In a game that featured five lead changes, the Hot Rods started the chaos off by taking a commanding lead in the third inning. Down a run at the start of the frame, the Hot Rods used two errors by the Dragons to put up a five-spot. Highlighting the surge was a pair of two-run singles by designated hitter Peter Maris and outfielder Joe Mccarthy as well as an additional run-scoring single from catcher Brett Sullivan.

From the bottom of the third to the bottom of the fifth, Dayton was able to mount a comeback and tie the game against Hot Rods starter Angel Yepez. The Dragons started things off with pair of RBI singles by second basemen Shed Long and catcher Tyler Stephenson in the third. Then, Long launched a two-run homer over the right-field wall in the fifth inning to tie up the game.

After Bowling Green retook the lead in the sixth on a RBI double by third basemen Michael Russell and a RBI triple from shortstop Jacon Cronenworth, Dayton came back with a RBI triple from left fielder Shane Mardirosian and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of third basemen Brantley Bell to tie the game back up at 7-7.

The back and forth stopped in the seventh inning after the Hot Rods got their eventual go-ahead run from another RBI single from Russell.

To finish things off, righty Roel Ramirez (W, 1-0) and closer Ian Gibaut (S, 1) combined to shutout the Dragons offense through the final three innings of the game. The ballgame ended in dramatic fashion when Mardirosian reached on a single in the ninth but got thrown at second by Sullivan trying to advance into scoring position on a wild pitch two batters later.

Overall, the Hot Rods cranked out a season-high 15 hits, led by three hits from McCarthy and outfielder Angel Perez. Bowling Green got two hits apiece from Cronenworth, Russell and outfielder Angel Moreno.

The Hot Rods will continue a five-game roadtrip on Monday as they play the first of three games in South Bend. Bowling Green will send LHP Genesis Cabrera to the bump while the Cubs will counter with a pitcher that is to be determined. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
