Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - The Clinton LumberKings (2-1) didn't lead in the ballgame until the seventh inning in their comeback win against the Kane County Cougars (1-2) in Sunday's series finale from Ashford University Field.
The Cougars had two separate leads in the contest, after finding the board in the top of the first inning on a passed ball by Clinton's catcher Arturo Nieto. The advantage was a short lived lead as Clinton evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on Braden Bishop's RBI fielder's choice.
Three innings later the Cougars' offense tacked on a pair of runs as Trevor Mitsui smacked an RBI single to plate Luke Lowery and Josh Anderson lifted a run scoring double. The 3-1 advantage was the largest lead for the Cougars' in their young season.
Carlos Hernandez started the game promising, but left in the fifth inning after walking in a run. Brody Greer (0-1) escaped a bases loaded jam after taking over, but was on the mound for Clinton's comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Chris Mariscal set the tone with a one-out triple and was driven in by Rayder Ascanio. The inning nearly ended as the Cougars thought they had turned a 3-6-1 double play, but on the throw to second base the umpire claimed shortstop Raymel Flores was pulled off the bag. Only the out at first was recorded and Ascanio reached third base on the play. Two batters later Ricky Eusebio singled home Ascanio for the go-ahead run.
Darin Gillies (1-0) earned his first win of the season with two innings of scoreless baseball. Joey Strain earned his second save of the year.
The Cougars return home to begin a three-game series hosting the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Monday's matchup will feature right-hander Dereck Rodriguez for the Kernels' against the Cougars' Justin Donatella. First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
