Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - The Bowling Green Hot Rods broke a 7-7 tie with one run in the seventh inning and held off the Dayton Dragons 8-7 on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons battled back to tie the game on two occasions after trailing 5-1 and 7-5 before the Hot Rods scored the eventual winning run.

The game featured more offense than any of the previous three contests between the clubs this season. The two teams combined for 29 hits and had balanced attacks throughout their batting orders.

The Dragons took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Tyler Stephenson doubled to the gap in right-center field and scored on Hector Vargas' single up the middle. But Bowling Green took advantage of two costly Dragons errors in the third to score five runs, four of which were unearned, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead.

The Dragons started back in the bottom of the third, getting back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Stephenson and Shed Long. Then in the fifth, Long blasted a two-run home run to right field to tie the game at 5-5.

Bowling Green responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Dragons came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Mitch Piatnik doubled with one out and scored on Shane Mardirosian's triple. Brantley Bell's RBI groundout brought in Mardirosian to tie the game at 7-7.

Bowling Green loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against Dragons reliever Manuel Aybar, getting two singles and a walk. Michael Russell then singled to center field to give the Hot Rods an 8-7 lead.

The Dragons did not have another base runner until Mardirosian led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center field. But Bell struck out on a third strike foul bunt, and Narciso Crook lined out to left for the second out. Mardirosian was then thrown out at second attempting to advance on a pitch in the dirt to end the game.

Dayton collected 14 hits. Mardirosian had the Dragons first three-hit game of the season with a triple and two singles. Crook, Stephenson, Long, and Piatnik each had two hits.

Dragons starting pitcher Franderlyn Romero worked the first five and one-third innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on nine hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Aybar was charged with the loss. He allowed one run on four hits over one and two-thirds innings.

The Dragons (1-3) travel to Lansing, Michigan to meet the Lansing Lugnuts (0-3) in the start to a three-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Ty Boyles, the 2015 Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year at Billings, will make his first start of 2016 for the Dragons. Lansing will counter with either Angel Perdomo (6-1, 2.60 with two clubs in 2015) or Franciso Rios (3-6, 4.27 with Vancouver in 2015).

After three games in Lansing, the Dragons return home to host the West Michigan Whitecaps in a four-game series starting Thursday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
